Summer Holiday Term 2008
The programme for the Summer Holiday term is Haydn String Quartet op74 No 2 and Holst St Paul’s Suite. Haydn’s Op 74 No2 was one of six quartets published in 1793. The fact that Haydn will have been expecting them to be performed publicly at the Salomon Concerts in London had an effect on the nature of the work in that there is a greater emphasis on the quartet playing as a group, rather than solo playing and dialogue. Also, the quartet begins with a strong introduction in order to capture audience attention. This makes it more appropriate for performance to a large audience as well as being suitable for more private entertainment. As such it is a work which is clearly suited to a performance by an Orchestra like ourselves. Many of you will already be familiar with the Holst, which he wrote for St Paul’s Girls’ School in 1912. It was subsequently revised and published in 1922.
We will continue to meet at the Exmouth Market Centre, next to the Holy Redeemer Church which is at the western end of Exmouth Market very close to the junction of Rosebery Avenue and Farringdon Road. Term starts on 2nd July with cello and viola sectionals at 7pm. Full orchestra starts, as usual, at 7.55pm.
Please check our timetable to see the detailed schedule for your orchestra section.
If you would like a hard copy of the timetable, I will have these with me at the rehearsals. Please note that there is no rehearsal on 20th August as I will be on holiday.
Please remember to bring a music stand.
The concert will be on 14th September at 4pm in the Holy Redeemer Church next to the Exmouth Market Centre. There will be a rehearsal beforehand between 1pm and 3pm. Concert dress will be all black as before.
Fees remain at the same level of £85 for the term. I have set up a new bank account which means that it is now possible to pay by direct transfer. I’m reluctant to publish the bank details further than I need to so if you would like to pay by this method please email me and I will forward the account information to you. Otherwise, please make cheques payable to “The Chamber Orchestra”. Also, it would be helpful if I could have the subscriptions in at, or before, the beginning of term, so that I can pay for the hall on time.
Best wishes and I look forward to seeing you on the 2nd.
